Why Hervey Bay Needs A New Community Centre |
|
|
|
- Hervey Bay is the second fastest growing city in Australia.
- As at February 2007, Hervey Bay had an estimated population of 54,457, comprising of 49% males and 51% females.
- Hervey Bay has experienced rapid growth and the accompanying challenges associated with a dramatic increase in population.
- Our rapid growth from small coastal fishing village to city has resulted in limited infrastructure to sustain the growth we are experiencing.
- The present 'Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre' is overbooked, inaccessible, crowded and unsuited for the programs and activities currently being delivered by the organisation.
- There is a lack of community facilities and halls in the urban area coupled with increasing demands for services, recreation, spaces, social groups, support groups, conferences and training spaces.
- The elongated 'Strip' development of Hervey Bay makes access to services difficult.
|
- Rising property costs, development pressures, and a lack of facilities means that community organisations and services can not find affordable spaces to lease. Viability of community based organisations is threatened.
- Many services are provided regionally on the Fraser Coast. Appropriate locum rooms are required for the delivery of effective regionally based services.
- The University is growing and keen to develop partnerships with the community which will provide education enabling our young people to live and work locally, and at the same time promote innovative and Best Practice approaches to learning.
- Many of those who relocate to Hervey Bay leave behind their family and social networks which increase the demand for community services that provide for the social interaction and family support.

At the Hervey Bay City Council meeting on September 25, 2007, Council unanimously agreed to continue its unflagging support of Hervey Bay's New Community Centre. Speaking of the New Centre, Trevor McDonald said that with the development of the Centre 'The people of Hervey Bay that are in the greatest need will have access to all services under one roof'. The New Centre will celebrate the excellent quality of our local community services and provide a safe, accessible and appropriate service locale for those people needing assistance.
